Synopsis...
Professor Lawrence Wether ... more
Professor Lawrence Wetherhold might be imperiously brilliant, monumentally self-possessed and an intellectual giant--but when it comes to solving the conundrums of love and family, he's as downright flummoxed as the next guy. His teenaged daughter is an acid-tongued overachiever who follows all too closely in dad's misery-loving footsteps, and his adopted, preposterously ne'er-do-well brother has perfected the art of freeloading. A widower who can't seem to find passion in anything anymore, not even the Victorian literature in which he's an expert, it seems Lawrence is sleepwalking through a very stunted middle age. When his brother shows up unexpectedly for an extended stay at just about the same time as he accidentally encounters his former student, the circumstances cause him to stir from his deep, deep freeze, with often comical, sometimes heartbreaking, consequences for himself and everyone around him.    hide

I wouldn’t call the movie depressing.. it’s just... nothing.. has no redeeming quality of any kind – the entire 1hour 33min run time it is stuck in the muck – keep your money and buy some day old bread to feed the pigeons it’s more entertaining.

What a depressing movie. The trailer gave me the impression of some light hearted humor.... I chuckled just a few times. If smart means being totally dysfunctional, then the writer made his point. This movie is not even worth watching on DVD!

What a disappointment. I like all the players but the movie just stunk. Was it the author's point that smart people are unhappy and boring? If so, bullseye in giving your audience empathy. Ellen Page is cute but her character was too much like Juno, time to break out of that mold.
